Pilates at Thrive

Pilates is a body workout that focuses on posture, stability, co-ordination, breathing and focus on body and mind. It is an effective training that strengthens your muscle groups and at the same time stretches them in order to keep/get a strong and flexible body. This contributes to a better posture in daily life. With Pilates you work on strengthening your core. These are the muscles around your spine; abdominal muscles, back muscles and pelvic floor muscles. Having a strong core gives you more strength and balance and therefore reduces the risk of injuries. This is because your core is active in every movement of daily life. The stronger your core, the easier it is to get through life.

In addition to strength building, Pilates pays a lot of attention to breathing and body awareness. This contributes to relaxation of body and mind; there is no need to think about anything else. This is also the reason that despite the exertion many people experience Pilates as relaxing.

For whom?

Everyone can do Pilates at their own level, at any age and with their own goals. Everyone benefits from it. You will discover muscles that you did not know existed! Some people want to become more flexible, others want to strengthen their weak backs. There are also athletes who practise Pilates to improve their performance in their sport. And if you have an injury or back problems that require you to train your trunk stability, Pilates is an excellent workout. This is why physiotherapists worldwide use the Pilates method as a supplement to regular treatment. It helps in the recovery and prevention of injuries and physical discomforts and/or chronic diseases.

Thrive Pilates class

A (Core) Pilates mat class at Thrive consists of a varied series of stabilising and mobilising exercises on the mat. In addition, at classes exercise balls and so-called therabands (elastic) are used. These aids help you become even more aware of your body and its movements. During the group lessons on the mat, you use your own body weight and focus on building core strength, concentration, control, posture and breathing.

At Thrive there is a wide variety of Pilates teachers. Every teacher has its own style of teaching, based on the basic principles of Pilates. This makes it fun to try out different teachers to see which style suits you best.

History of Pilates

Pilates is an exercise science developed by Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Pilates developed his method during the First World War with the intention of improving the rehabilitation programme for war veterans. Believing that mental and physical health are intertwined, he developed exercises with an emphasis on controlled precise movements. These were intended to help wounded soldiers regain their health and strengthen their core muscles. Today, Pilates is often seen as a workout for women only. But given the history of Pilates, we can safely say that men can benefit from it too!

"Within ten sessions you notice the difference; within twenty sessions you see the difference, within thirty sessions you have a whole new body."

- Joseph Pilates

Pilates vs Yoga

Yoga is a more than 3,000-year-old philosophy that focuses on meditation through a physical practice. Pilates is much more recent (100 years old) and focuses directly on the physical aspect without the philosophical approach of Yoga. In practice they are complementary and it is good to practice both depending on your current needs. A clear overview of the similarities and differences can be found under this link. pilates vs yoga'. The best is of course to experience both!

Yoga vs Pilates

Pilates and Yoga have many similarities, but also differences. The picture below gives an overview. On the right (in red) Pilates, on the left (in yellow) Yoga and the similarities in the middle. The picture gives a nice first impression of Pilates ...
