This year we invite you to slow down and study it properly. Across nine monthly Iyengar yoga workshops in Amsterdam Oost, eight of our senior teachers each take on one cornerstone of the method: foundation and alignment, breath, strength, flexibility, props, sequencing, inversions, and the therapeutic heart of the practice.
Join one workshop or follow the whole series. Each stands on its own, yet together they build into something larger. As the Iyengar studio of Amsterdam Oost, with the widest Iyengar offering in the city, this is a program we are uniquely able to offer.
Iyengar yoga rewards patience. It is a practice of precision: small adjustments that change everything, and understanding why a pose works, not only how.
Program:
Each workshop lasts three hours and is open to all levels. Everybody is welcome. Choose a single session, or take a 3 or 6 workshop pass: the more you join, the more your practice deepens.
Single workshop: €48 / members €43
3 workshop pass: €130 / members €120
6 workshop pass: €250 / members €220
We begin at the beginning, with the importance of alignment in the asanas. Through hands-on adjustments and props such as blocks, belts and the wall, we practise the basic standing postures with close attention to precision. You will learn how good alignment prevents injury and builds both strength and self-confidence. And we open with a first introduction to Iyengar Yoga and Ayurveda, a thread we pick up again in the closing workshop.
This workshop begins with feeling your breath and a general awareness of breathing. We merge the breath into basic restorative asanas, exploring the main spaces in the body, and experience how a restorative practice helps to integrate breath into posture. As the breath settles in each asana, you are gently guided into deeper layers of relaxation.
We build strength in the arms and legs through standing poses. As that strength grows, we gain confidence in balancing, using props wherever they help. With the spine well supported, we begin to challenge it in forward bends and backbends. Throughout this journey, breath awareness is woven through the different asanas.
In this workshop, we explore flexibility through the precise and progressive methods of Iyengar Yoga. Through standing poses, supported backbends, and thoughtfully sequenced actions, you learn how alignment, timing, and the intelligent use of props cultivate safe and sustainable openness in the body. This growing sense of openness is not limited to the physical level; it can gradually extend to the breath, the mind, and the inner landscape, supporting a more spacious, steady, and receptive state of being.
You will leave with a clearer understanding of how to work toward flexibility without force, improved mobility in key areas such as the hips and shoulders, and practical techniques to continue your practice with stability, awareness, and ease.
Here we discover how to use props the Iyengar way: as teachers that we eventually become independent of. You will learn to stay longer in poses by using props intelligently, finding that deeper relaxation comes through the stability and comfort they offer. We explore how props can activate certain areas more strongly, sharpening your understanding of an asana, and how they let us practise derivatives of poses in which we rehearse the actions of the final asana.
In this workshop we explore the “why” behind the order of asana: not only the order in which the various families of asanas are practised, but most of all how the same asana, used differently, gives a totally different effect.
It is an invitation to step out of our routine of simply “doing” or “performing” poses, and to start “playing” with them. My intention is for you to leave with a different way of seeing: to look at any asana and smile, not with a recipe for a sequence to memorise.
In this workshop, we explore how different yoga asanas offer an opportunity to develop sensitivity, and therefore awareness. Working with precision and alignment is not only important for safety; it is also a chance to cultivate the intelligence of the body, which translates into a refinement of our perception.
We learn the difference between movement and action, opening the door to a deeper inner practice. The ability to observe what we are doing while we are doing it is an essential part of transforming the physical side of our practice into an inner one. Through this process, we learn to observe the mind more closely while observing the body and the breath, both in familiar asanas and in more challenging poses.
Curious about turning your world upside down? This workshop explores inversions in a safe, progressive, and enjoyable way. Whether you are new to poses like headstand and shoulderstand, or looking to refine your technique and deepen your understanding, you will find plenty to work on. Using the precision, alignment, and support of the Iyengar method, we look at how props help us practise, and we build confidence, strength, and balance. We also explore the steady, calming qualities that inversions can bring to both body and mind. Discover how seeing things from a different perspective can be both refreshing and restorative.
We close the year by exploring the therapeutic side of Iyengar Yoga and Ayurveda: support for injury, health conditions, limited flexibility, physical limitations, and a fuller way of living. We practise advanced alignment, inversions, and restorative poses, working to correct postural imbalances and prevent injury. In one cohesive practice, we gather all the pillars from the previous workshops, integrating breath, strength, and mindfulness.
